The NC500: Scotland’s Ultimate Road Trip in a VDub Campervan

The NC500 is one of Scotland’s most popular touring routes - a spectacular 513 mile loop of mostly coastal road that winds around the north of Inverness.

The NC500 is one of Scotland’s most popular touring routes - a spectacular 513‑mile loop of mostly coastal road that winds around the north of Inverness.  Our Inverness pick-up point is the perfect starting point (but remember our Aberdeen base is only 2.5 hours away too!).

Most travellers take five days or more to complete the circular journey, which begins and ends in Inverness, allowing plenty of time to soak in the scenery.

Showcasing the very best of the North Highlands, the NC500 is an unforgettable way to explore some of Scotland’s finest natural beauty. Travelling in a VDub Adventures campervan means you can skip the stress of searching for limited hotel or B&B availability and enjoy the freedom to stop wherever the views take you.

Our top 3 spots are

Durness – Wild Beaches & Big Horizons

Durness is one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left. Perched on the far north‑west tip of Scotland, it’s home to sweeping white‑sand beaches, turquoise water and rugged cliffs that feel wonderfully remote.  The coastline is a dream for walkers, photographers and anyone who loves wide‑open spaces. You can explore Smoo Cave, watch for seabirds riding the wind, or simply park up the VDub and enjoy the kind of peace you only find at the edge of the map.

Plockton – The Jewel of the West Coast

Often called “the jewel of the Highlands,” Plockton is a picture‑perfect village tucked into a sheltered bay on the west coast. With palm trees lining the waterfront, colourful cottages, and calm waters dotted with small boats, it feels almost Mediterranean on a sunny day. It’s a brilliant place to slow down, enjoy fresh seafood, take a boat trip to spot seals, or wander the quiet lanes with a camera in hand. The drive in and out is stunning too, making it a favourite stop for VDub travellers who love scenic routes and charming coastal villages.

Bealach na Bà – The Famous Alpine Pass

No NC500 journey is complete without experiencing the legendary Bealach na Bà. This winding, steep mountain pass leads into Applecross and offers jaw‑dropping views across the Highlands and out to Skye. It’s one of the most iconic drives in Scotland — slow, careful, and absolutely worth it. Once you reach Applecross, reward yourself with a meal at the local inn and a wander along the shoreline.
