Stay Local This Summer with VDub Adventures: Less Driving, More Fun

13th July 2026

You don’t need to travel far to have an unforgettable summer. Here in the North East, we’re surrounded by breathtaking scenery – from rugged cliffs and sweeping golden beaches to ancient castles and characterful villages.

Why Staying Local This Summer Makes Sense

Summer is all about slowing down, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying simple moments. When you stay local, you get more time doing exactly that — and less time sitting behind the wheel.

Whether you’re into adventure sports, history, wildlife, great food, or simply craving a quiet escape, there’s something here to suit everyone. That’s why staying local has become one of our favourite ways to make the most of the summer months. With a VW campervan, you can make the most of what’s right on your doorstep without long drives or complicated plans.

Short Drives, Big Adventures in the North East

The North East is packed with brilliant spots that feel like a holiday without hours of travel. With a campervan, you can head out after work, settle in for the night, and wake up somewhere beautiful - all without leaving the region. Some of our favourites spots are:

  • Stonehaven – A charming harbour town known for its dramatic coastline, award-winning fish and chips, ice-cream and the famous Dunnottar Castle just a short walk away. While you're there, try stand-up paddleboarding or a wood fired sauna with Stonehaven Paddleboarding.
  • Colliston, just south of Newburgh and close to the Forvie National Nature Reserve. It’s a quieter stretch of beach on the North Sea coastline, sitting within the wider North East Scotland region. The sheltered little harbour is perfect for young children to splash around and play, making it a lovely spot for relaxed family time. Just up the road you’ll find Cruden Bay, home to the dramatic Slains Castle - a must‑see.
  • For an inland option, Alford is ideal. The town has everything you need for a comfortable stop - shops, cafés, walks. Plus two main attractions: the Grampian Transport Museum and the Alford Heritage Centre, both perfect for a slow, local day out. There's Haughton Country Park, ideal for families with its woodland trails, park, pump track and big open spaces. It’s also a great base for exploring the wider area, with easy drives to Bennachie, Ballater or the Cairngorms further afield.
  • Royal Deeside is stunning: Ballater is a fantastic inland campervan stop. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, and forests, it’s ideal for walking, biking and exploring. With great cafés, restaurants, shops, and easy access to Lochnagar, it’s a perfect mix of comfort and adventure. Braemar offers dramatic scenery, wildlife, and wide open spaces. It’s the gateway to the Cairngorms with loads of walking routes. Brilliant inland choices if you want that “proper getaway” feeling without travelling far.
