How to Enjoy a Campervan Trip Responsibly in Scotland

Renting a campervan  gives you the opportunity to see the best of our bonny land at a pace that suits you, meaning that you have the freedom and flexibility to adapt your plans day-by-day so that you’ll never miss a thing you truly want to see on your travels.

With awe-inspiring views and glorious experiences to take in, Scotland has lots to offer and we want future generations to enjoy what we’re able to today.  That’s why we ask anyone renting a van from us to enjoy their travels responsibly; from looking after your health and safety, to the vans and, of course, the spots you visit. Here are some top tips to keep in mind.

Remember a van is bigger than a car!

If you’re not used to driving a large vehicle like a campervan, try to take extra precautions when driving. By planning your route before you set off, you can find out which roads will be wide enough to fit your vehicle. Also, if you’re planning a visit further north, a lot of the Scottish Highlands have free-roaming cattle, goats and sheep. These animals can make their way onto country roads, so make sure to be on the lookout.

Dispose of waste correctly

No one likes to talk about it but it needs to be done to help keep Scotland’s landscapes as clean as possible. Various forms of waste can come from your campervan, including chemical toilet waste, general waste and water waste. There are hundreds of campsites across the country that will allow you to use their campsite disposal areas when parking up. It’s crucial to respect your surroundings and always dispose of waster properly.

Don’t light bonfires or barbeques

Bonfires and barbeques can be fun, but they can quickly get out of control. If you must have a barbeque, make sure it is on a non-flammable surface such as rocks or stone.

Respect the local outdoor access code

It’s worth brushing up on your knowledge of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, so that you can be confident in knowing what’s possible and not, from avoiding disturbing wildlife, to accessing farmland and being a responsible camper.
